Tutoring Classes for Parents

How parents can get started with tutoring classes and manage their learner’s tutoring enrollment

Outschool tutoring classes are 1-on-1 classes where families choose from a teacher’s available meeting times. They are a good fit for families with learners who benefit from a personalized class setting and need scheduling flexibility to adjust and stay on track when life happens.

This article explains how parents can get started with tutoring classes and manage their learner’s tutoring enrollment.

Getting started with a tutoring class

After choosing a tutoring class, families can enroll from the class listing page, sync personal calendars, and join live tutoring meetings.

Completing your tutoring enrollment

To begin enrolling in a tutoring class, open the class listing page and review the teacher’s available meeting times. Select a date and time that works for your family to start enrollment.

If you do not see a time that works for your family, scroll down on the listing page and use the Ask a Question button to contact the educator about scheduling accommodations.

Adding tutoring meetings to your calendar

To add tutoring meeting dates to an outside calendar, review Syncing Your Calendar.

Joining live tutoring meetings

Like other classes on Outschool, tutoring classes will appear on your learner schedule. When it's time for class, simply click on the class title to be taken to the classroom page.

To join a live tutoring meeting, follow these steps:

  1. Select Enter Classroom to prepare your learner for their live meeting.

  2. Once in the classroom, your learner will see the Join Live Meeting button, as well as the Teacher tab for messaging your educator.

Troubleshooting live tutoring meeting access

If your learner can’t enter the classroom or join the live meeting, review Classroom and Zoom Troubleshooting Tips for steps to resolve common access issues.

Managing your learner’s tutoring enrollment

After enrolling in a tutoring class, you can manage upcoming meetings from your learner’s tutoring enrollment management page. This includes adding meetings, accepting teacher-suggested meeting times, rescheduling future meetings, or canceling upcoming meetings.

Note: If you have enrolled through ClassWallet, please see this article for more information about managing your Tutoring enrollment.

Adding additional tutoring meetings

If you would like to add another tutoring meeting to your learner’s current enrollment, use the option to add a meeting from the tutoring enrollment management page. Choose from the teacher’s available dates and select a meeting time.

Payment timing depends on whether your enrollment already has future meetings scheduled:

  • If your enrollment does not have future meetings scheduled, you will pay for the newly added meeting immediately. Future weekly meetings will automatically charge on Sundays using the payment method on file.

  • If your enrollment already has future meetings scheduled, you will pay immediately only for a newly added meeting that meets during the current week. Future meetings will automatically charge on Sundays using the payment method on file.

Extending tutoring into a recurring weekly schedule

To convert a one-time tutoring meeting to a recurring weekly schedule, use the option to extend or add future meetings from the tutoring enrollment management page.

If the class meets during the current week, you’ll pay for the first class upfront. Future meetings are automatically charged weekly on Sundays using the payment method on file.

Accepting teacher-suggested meetings for tutoring classes

Parents are notified by email when teachers suggest new meeting times. You will also see a notice on the enrollment management page where you can accept or decline the meeting time.

You’ll have three days to accept or decline teacher requests to reschedule or add additional meetings. For added class meetings, you’ll pay for the new class when approving the addition. Future weekly meetings are charged automatically on Sundays using the payment method on file.

Rescheduling a tutoring meeting

Families can reschedule future tutoring meeting dates from the list of upcoming tutoring meetings up to 48 hours before the meeting.

To reschedule a tutoring meeting, follow these steps:

  1. Open the tutoring class from your learner’s schedule.

  2. Find the upcoming meeting you want to change.

  3. Use the rescheduling option for that meeting.

  4. Choose a new date and time from the teacher’s available times and submit the request.

For recurring tutoring meetings, you can reschedule all future meetings with one request only if the teacher is available for each new meeting time. If not, reschedule individual meetings that fit the teacher’s availability or contact the teacher to arrange a different time.

Canceling a tutoring meeting

Families can cancel future tutoring meeting dates from the list of upcoming meetings.

To cancel a tutoring meeting, follow these steps:

  1. Open the tutoring class from your learner’s schedule.

  2. Find the upcoming meeting you want to cancel.

  3. Use the cancellation option for that meeting.

  4. Review the credit return eligibility shown before confirming.

  5. Choose whether to cancel only that meeting or all future meetings in the recurring schedule.

Families receive a credit return for the tutoring meeting(s) they cancel within 24 hours of auto-renewal.

After canceling all future tutoring meetings, families will continue to have access to the classroom. Please note that withdrawing from a class will remove access to all class content.

Requesting a makeup meeting for a missed tutoring session

If your learner misses a tutoring session after the session time has passed, you cannot reschedule it yourself. To arrange a makeup, contact your teacher directly from the Teacher tab inside the classroom and ask the teacher if adding a new meeting time is possible.

If the teacher adds a makeup meeting, you’ll receive an email notification and a notice on your enrollment page to accept or decline the meeting. Accepting the meeting will trigger a charge for the new session.
