At Outschool, we recognize the potential of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to enhance the educational experience for our learners. Educators on Outschool have the autonomy to incorporate AI into their teaching methods as they see fit. However, we expect all educators to follow these guidelines to ensure the responsible and ethical use of AI:
Transparency and Informed Consent:
For some educators, AI tools may be a good fit for generating parts of your class content, including assessments, images, or other engagement tactics. Be transparent with your learners and their families about the use of AI in your class, either in your class description or on your classroom wall, as relevant. Explain how AI will be used and its purpose in enhancing the learning experience. Be sure not to use AI in a way that is undisclosed or deceptive, or that might compromise trust with your learners or families.
Similarly, learners should also be encouraged to be transparent with you on how they are using AI. Some learners may use an AI tool to answer homework questions or complete assignments. In cases where you are giving a learner a grade for taking your class, you should set and clearly list your own classroom policy about how you will handle these instances and whether you will accept AI-supported work for a grade.
Data Privacy and Security:
As always, follow Outschool's privacy policies. Ensure that any AI tools or platforms you use protect the personal information of your learners if they are under 13 years of age. Read our COPPA compliance policy for more information. If you have a class listed for learners under 13 and a tool you wish to use is not on Outschool’s approved list, you are responsible for ensuring COPPA compliance. Never collect, store, or share student data with AI tools.
Ethical Content Creation and Monitoring:
Outschool believes in using AI to promote inclusivity and provide personalized learning experiences that cater to diverse learner needs and learning styles. Be sure to not allow AI tools to perpetuate biases or discriminate against any group based on characteristics such as race, gender, or socio-economic status, or exclude or marginalize learners by implementing AI in a way that hinders accessibility or inclusivity. Instead, be careful to ensure that any AI-generated content adheres to our class content policy, is accurate, and provides a valuable learning experience for your students. AI is just one resource among many, and you should follow our multiple perspectives policy in order to create the most objective and holistic view of your class content to ensure unbiased clarity. Be sure to monitor any AI tools and systems you implement to ensure these guidelines are met. Do not use AI to create content that is misleading, inappropriate, or of low quality, and do not rely solely on AI in ways that remove your oversight of the content and outcomes in your classes.
Violations of our class content policy or community standards through the use of AI tools may result in the removal of your classes from the Outschool platform or otherwise falling out of good standing on Outschool. If you’d like to stay informed about best practices in AI usage in education, we offer free professional learning aligned to our ACE framework to help you update your knowledge and skills to use AI effectively and responsibly.
