Guidance for parents who want to set up a private class for learners

Updated over 4 months ago

As an Outschool parent, you can request a private class directly from a class listing page. A private class means that you pay a specific enrollment price for a small group class, exclusively for a group of learners that you’ve preselected. You can request private classes for learning pods, events, virtual birthday parties, and more.

This article will walk you through how to set up a private class with the educator, then will detail how to complete payment through various methods.

Setup

Towards the bottom of the class listing page, use the Request Another Time button to send the educator a detailed request for your private class. This button will appear on all group class listings. Be sure to include preferred dates, times, budget, and the number of learners expected.

Your request will then go to the educator as a direct message, and they should respond back to you within 24 hours. This will be visible in your Conversations. We recommend messaging an educator about an existing one-time class, the preferred format for private classes.

Once you’ve communicated with the educator, they will create a private section for you and provide a direct link for you to enroll.

Payment Methods

If you’d like to pay on behalf of all private class participants, you can either use gift enrollments or gift cards.

Gift enrollments:

  1. Click the private section link provided by the educator, and enroll your learner, also purchasing the necessary number of gift enrollments to fill the class section.

  2. Share your unique gift URL with each parent of the class participants via email or text.

  3. Each participating parent should use your gift link to claim their enrollment(s), and they’ll automatically be enrolled in the private class with your learner(s).

    1. For security and safety reasons, each parent must sign up for their own Outschool account, or use their existing one if they have it. Everyone will agree to our Terms of Service, which helps set expectations about the safety and privacy at Outschool. They’ll create their Outschool account and add learners as soon as they’ve claimed your gift.

  4. You and all private class participants should begin class at the agreed-upon time by using the Join Live Meeting button on the Classroom.

  5. Enjoy your private class!

Gift cards:

  1. Click the private section link provided by the educator, and enroll your learner.

  2. Purchase and give gift cards to every family with learner(s) participating in the private class.

    1. Gift cards should be in the amount of the cost of enrollment in the private class. Eg. For a class that costs $15 per learner, give a $15 gift card to your friend with one learner in the private class.

  3. Each participating parent should redeem their gift card.

  4. Share the private section link with participating parents, and make sure they each enroll their learners separately.
