Name: Teacher Jonna Smith
Hello, I’m Mr. Smith. Music is my passion, and for the past 12 years, I have called the community symphony home. As a music enthusiast in the Metro Area and volunteer music instructor, I am called upon to teach any kind of music class for kids aged 7 to 18. I’ve done it all, and that means I do love music! My teaching philosophy is based on growth and not perfection. I believe that we are all on our journey and will succeed in our own ways! My primary instrument is the piano, and writing song lyrics. I record and publish my music.
Please let us know your experiences with kids.
I am a professional musician and symphony member of the Wecon Metro Symphony. I play concert piano professionally and also conduct Volunteer General Music Education classes for Grades 2-8 in our Symphony Educational Outreach program. In this role for the past four years, I have been responsible for preparing lessons and leading music instruction focusing on musical concepts, choir, and small symphony classes for the past several years for kids aged 7 to 15.
In my spare time, I am a Music in our World Volunteer, where I travel and teach general music lessons in developing countries (Central and South America). These are short volunteer trips, where I spend a month in Ecuador and Costa Rica teaching music to support small music programs and music education for youth.
I also provide private music lessons in classical piano and guitar, where I have helped over 50 budding pianists aged 5-15 with weekly lessons for the past 12 years.

I hope to host piano for little classes, beginner piano and support through private lessons. Once I am established, I would love to bring my passion for musical theory to high school students, and perhaps even establish an ongoing chorus class. What fun to sing together weekly!

Piano Lessons for Littles
Piano for Littles is the perfect beginning spot! In this two-week course, students will learn basic note reading, rhythm, and musicianship skills at the piano with two fun songs.
Calling all budding pianists with no prior experience! In this two-week class, I will teach basic piano concepts.
Week 1: Navigating the keyboard and basic rhythm
Week 2: Basic Note Identification and Basic Musical Symbols
Together, we will take a small step into developing our mystical skills, and wrap up in our final class with a mini-concert! Together, we will play Twinkle Twinkle Little Star. No worries if you are not perfect, this class is all about having fun and enjoying a first experience with the piano.
While no prior knowledge is required, regular practice on a keyboard or piano in the student's home is required between each weekly lesson. This is a great option to see if your child is ready for regular piano lessons.
Spotlight Your Understanding of Multiple Perspectives
Name: Nasir Oiro
Welcome to my Outschool Page! My name is Nasir. I am a High School history teacher and part-time college professor. My bachelor's degree is from the State University of Oklahoma in Political Science and History, with a minor in multicultural studies. I earned my alternative teaching certification from the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards.
I teach classes on everything historical, from politics to geopolitical classes, and with a wide range of topics from modern to ancient world history. My classes are taught from varying perspectives, and I am certain to include primary and secondary sources. History should be seen from all perspectives and angles; that way, every narrative is told, seen, and understood - Exposing learners to a broad range of viewpoints, rather than one-sided narratives, helps them acquire crucial critical thinking skills and become more empathic, too.

2012 to the Present I serve as a High School 9-12 Lead History teacher for Washama County High School. Responsible for preparing lessons and curricula, teaching students to analyze different texts, providing academic support and fostering good relationships. I am comfortable working to strict deadlines and also open to feedback.
2018 to present, I am also teaching part-time USA History to Dual Enrollment Seniors and incoming freshmen at Wanta Valley Community College. My responsibilities include executing history lessons that showcase multiple perspectives by applying primary and secondary sources.
2005 to the present, I am a History Narrative Volunteer at the Arawak Community Library, where I host a monthly history get-together with local and national historians. The sole purpose of this group is to expand our community's knowledge of historical events through community service and outreach. We host a yearly community historical society social and conduct bi-annual in-school learning events for grades 1 to 12.

World History for the Growing Historian
Ages 13 - 18
World history is amazing! It is even better when we take time to look at the historical narrative through the eyes of many, not just famous historical figures. In this class, students will analyze, apply and understand how historical events were shaped by reviewing primary and secondary sources.
This class will include the views of many to ensure Growing Historians are well-versed in the world history narrative. We will use the principles of multiple perspectives as seen and outlined by teachinghistory.org, which requires incorporating source materials that reflect different views of a historical event.
Week One: Beginnings of Human History
Week Two: Early Civilizations
Week Three: Exchange and Encounter
Week Four: First Global Age
Week Five: Age of Revolution
Week Six: Crisis and Achievement
Week Seven: The World Since
In this class, we will use Smithsonian Primary Sources in the U.S. and World History, First Nations, and Native Knowledge 360 as our primary sources. Primary sources include letters, journals, and articles written at the time of historical events from the Library of Congress Digital Access Open Library.
As always with my classes, we will think critically and make personal and civic decisions based on information from our sources. Often, a different story emerges when those multiple perspectives are put together. The result is enriched historical understanding.

For the past 10 years, I’ve served as a docent for the Kennedy Children’s Museum for their hands-on kids' history exhibits. I volunteer my hours and am proud to say I am the longest-serving volunteer, with over 1000 logged show hours. I take students aged 5-12 through our interactive museum and share our kids-focused history education programming. Kennedy Children’s Museum is a proud winner of the 2022 USA Museum’s most distinguished educational programming in the nation award.
As a homeschooling mom of 15 years, I am well-versed in many areas of the curriculum and know how to help students get past tough subjects. I take my skills to the next level by volunteering and leading a weekly high school co-op learning session. Our topics range from English to speech, drama, and social clubs. I’ve served as the lead English teacher for 5 years, but I am proud of creating a weekly escape room class! I build escape rooms around their learning modulus, such as what is a transitive verb to who built the Sears building. I’ve supported over 300 budding escape room artists in the 10 years I’ve served at the co-op.

My favorite passion is crafting! I am a self-taught fiber artist. I spent the past 10 years perfecting yarn spinning, felting, and fiber art painting. I share my passion for this art with my daughter, 11, who has sold her crafted pieces at our local maker markets. I blog about my fiber arts and share many of my artwork on social media platforms. I enjoy sharing my love for fiber arts with kids aged 6-12
