Optimizing class recordings

Sharing your screen during class for optimal Zoom recording formatting

Updated over a week ago

Overview

As a result of a change in July 2021, when live class Zoom recordings are viewed from the classroom, they will show you and all learners in Gallery view, regardless of which view you used during class. We’ll explain a workaround below.

If you pin or spotlight your video or host class in Speaker view, the recording will still display in Gallery view, as pictured below.

When you share your screen during class, however, the recording will show only your shared screen in full-screen view and the active speaker in the top right, as pictured below.

Sharing a feed from a secondary camera

Some teachers choose to use a second camera during class to demonstrate detail up close. Just like when you share your screen, sharing a second camera’s feed will also display as full screen in the class recording, with the active speaker in the upper right corner.

Follow the steps below to share from a secondary camera in Zoom:

  1. Click Share Screen from the bottom menu.

  2. Click the Advanced button at the top of the box.

  3. Choose the option to share Content from 2nd Camera. Check the boxes for Share sound and Optimize for video clip to keep audio and video in sync.

  4. Click the Share button in the bottom left corner to share from the second camera.

  5. To return to normal view, click the red Stop Sharing button. When you stop sharing, the recording will again show Gallery view with you and all participants.
