Zoom Live Captioning

Helping learners and parents enable live captioning in Zoom

Updated over 5 months ago

Zoom now allows you to turn on live captioning during your class! Your learners (or parents) may reach out to you before class begins – or even at the beginning of class – and ask that you initiate this feature. The good news is that it’s easy to activate. The great news is that it’s incredibly accurate and will improve your learners’ experiences! Please note that live captioning only supports English language captions at this time.

Please note that you’ll need to enable this setting in each Zoom meeting that you host as an Outschool teacher. Your learner will need to enable it on their side of the Zoom meeting as well (see Step 4).

Note: Closed captioning is available on ChromeOS (Chromebooks), but live transcription is not yet available for this operating system.

Follow the steps below:

Step 1: Go to your “Live Transcripts” button at the bottom of the host control bar.

Step 2: Click “Live Transcript” --> ”Enable Auto-Transcription.”

Step 3: Once you enable this button, you will see the transcript start running at the bottom of the Zoom meeting video. Attendees will also be alerted that Live Transcript is available.

Step 4: After you activate the transcript, your learners need to enable Auto-Transcription on their end, by clicking on Live Transcript - > Enable Auto-Transcription. They can use the up arrow to select display settings: showing subtitles (with the additional feature of controlling the text font size) or the full transcript.

Step 5: This feature is dependent on the Zoom Live Transcription service running. In order to determine if there is an issue with Live Transcription, subscribe to the Zoom Service Status page and this will send you an email if there is an issue with their platform. You can also go to it directly to see if there is an incident reported on Live Transcription.
