Learn what’s changing, how the updated self-paced experience works, and what to expect as we roll out the new experience.

Updated today

We’re introducing an updated self-paced experience that makes classes easier for learners to follow and for you to build. This article focuses on what’s new in the updated self-paced experience and how to navigate the transition.

For guidance on enrollments, pacing, and teacher support timing, refer to How Self-Paced Classes Work for Teachers.

📌 What to expect during the transition

We’re rolling out the updated self-paced experience in phases.

  • Existing classes will continue to use the previous experience for now

  • COMING SOON: New classes you create will use the updated experience

We’ll share more details soon on how to transition existing classes while preserving enrollments and reviews.

What’s new in the updated self-paced experience?

  • Flexible content blocks: Build your class using video, reading, and assignment blocks, each designed for a specific type of learning.

  • Drag-and-drop builder: Easily rearrange your content by dragging and reordering blocks.

  • Preview Classroom: See your classroom exactly as new learners will see it before publishing.

  • Draft and publish: Changes are saved as drafts until you publish, so you can update and review your class before it’s visible to new learners.

  • Automatic progress tracking: A visible progress bar updates as learners move through the class, so they can track what’s done and what’s next.

  • Integrated messaging: Communicate with learners through activity-level messaging tied to specific content blocks, along with general messaging for updates and check-ins

Frequently asked questions

Are self-paced classes changing overall?

How families enroll in and access self-paced classes is not changing. Learners will still move through classes at their own pace. These updates improve how classes are built and experienced.

Why do some of my classes look different?

We’re rolling out the updated self-paced experience in phases. During this transition, your existing classes will use the previous experience, while any new classes you create will use the updated experience.

Will my existing classes or enrollments change?

Your existing classes and the enrollments in those classes will remain unchanged. They will continue in the previous self-paced experience, and current learners will keep using the version of the class they originally enrolled in.

What happens to self-paced classes that are currently saved as drafts?

If you have a self-paced class that is currently saved as a draft, it will remain in the experience in which it was created. You can continue building, editing, and publishing it as usual. If you’d prefer to use the updated experience, you can create a new class by starting from the beginning of the class creation process.

Can I switch a class I created in the updated experience back to the previous experience?

Classes created in the updated self-paced experience cannot be switched back to the previous experience. Once a class is created using the updated format, it will continue to use that experience.

How will I know if my class is using the updated experience?

Classes using the updated experience include new features such as content blocks that you can drag and rearrange, enhanced messaging, and the ability to preview the classroom.

Can I switch an existing class to the updated experience?

Existing classes cannot be switched to the updated experience yet. We don’t recommend recreating them in the updated experience, since your current classes already have enrollments, content, and reviews associated with them. We’ll share more details soon about how to transition existing classes.

Will families see a difference when enrolling?

There are no changes to how families enroll in or access self-paced classes. During this transition, families may notice differences in the classroom experience if their learner is enrolled in a mix of classes from the previous and updated experiences. If families have questions, they can contact Outschool Support.

What should I do if I have questions, issues, or feedback?

If you have questions, run into issues, or want to share feedback, please contact Outschool Support. Your feedback is especially helpful during this transition as we continue improving the self-paced experience.
