Overview
Outschool is moving teacher payouts from PayPal to Stripe.
This change will not affect how much you earn or how you price your classes. However, some payouts may be sent on a different day of the week than you’re used to, and there will be a short processing period between when Outschool sends a payout to Stripe and when the money reaches your bank.
Stripe setup will become available to teachers and organizations on a rolling basis. We’ll notify you when it’s time to create your Stripe profile. You can begin set up through your Outschool teacher dashboard as soon as Stripe onboarding is available to you.
Key things to know:
You’ll create your Stripe profile through your Outschool teacher dashboard.
Outschool will send your payout to your Stripe balance. Stripe will then transfer the funds to your bank.
Outschool covers Stripe’s payout-processing costs.
Stripe will provide a more detailed breakdown of the enrollments included in each payout.
If you haven’t completed Stripe setup when PayPal payouts end, Outschool will hold your earnings until setup is complete. Your earnings will then be paid through Stripe.
📌 Current status
We’re in the early stages of this transition.
Payouts continue through PayPal for now; no action is required
Stripe onboarding is not yet available for all teachers; we'll share next steps when ready
Payouts via Stripe will begin once the transition is ready; teachers will be updated in advance
Timing is tentative and subject to change. We'll update this page and communicate directly with teachers when next steps are ready.
Setting up your Stripe profile
When can I set up Stripe?
Stripe setup is becoming available on a rolling basis. We’ll notify you when it is available for your account.
Once notified:
Go to Teacher Account Settings from your Outschool teacher dashboard.
Select Payout Account.
Follow the prompts to create your Stripe profile.
Setup should take only a few minutes. You’ll enter your personal and bank information, and Stripe may ask you to verify your identity.
Important: Start from your Outschool teacher dashboard, not from Stripe’s website. Creating an account directly through Stripe may result in a duplicate business profile.
What happens if I don’t set up Stripe before PayPal payouts end?
Outschool will hold your unpaid earnings until you complete Stripe setup. Once your Stripe profile is set up and verified, those earnings will be released through Stripe.
You will not lose earnings because of a delayed setup.
Can I use an existing Stripe account?
You’ll need a separate Stripe profile specifically to Outschool, even if you already use Stripe for another business.
Create this profile through your Outschool teacher dashboard so it connects directly to your Outschool account. You won’t need to log in to Stripe each time you receive a payout, Stripe will transfer funds to your bank automatically.
Why do I need a verification code to open my payout settings?
Before viewing or changing your payout settings, you’ll be asked to enter a code sent by text message. You’ll be asked for another code whenever you return to your payout settings after logging back in.
This added verification provides an extra layer of protection for your payout settings by requiring a code before the information can be viewed or changed.
What information can Outschool see?
Outschool can see:
Your payout history
Whether your Stripe profile has been verified
Outschool cannot access or change the personal or banking information stored in your Stripe profile.
How payouts reach your bank
Outschool sends your payout to your Stripe balance. This happens according to Outschool’s payout schedule.
Stripe transfers the available balance to your bank. Stripe schedules these transfers automatically. The default transfer frequency is daily.
After Outschool sends your payout to Stripe, Stripe automatically transfers it to your bank. This bank-processing step typically takes 2–3 business days for most US accounts, although Stripe recommends allowing 2–5 business days. Timing is determined by Stripe and your bank and may vary by country; it does not change the date Outschool sends your payout.
Note: The date Outschool sends your payout to Stripe may not be when the funds appear in your bank account. If you check your bank account that day, the transfer may still be processing.
You can change how often Stripe transfers your available balance to your bank in your Stripe settings. Changing that frequency will not affect when Outschool sends your payout to Stripe. The default is daily. The time required for an individual bank transfer to settle is determined by Stripe and your bank and cannot be adjusted by Outschool.
Payment Schedules
Outschool will send class earnings to Stripe according to the following schedule:
Class or payment type | When Outschool sends the payout |
Recurring classes and weekly payment schedules | 7 days after the first class meeting of that week |
Fixed-length classes | 7 days after the section starts |
Self-paced classes, Chat Groups, or any enrollments without a start time | 7 days after purchase |
OUTreach referrals, bonuses, and one-time payments | No sooner than 48 hours after the payment is issued by Outschool |
Is this different from the PayPal payout schedule?
For most teachers, yes. Payouts will now consistently follow the schedule above once they move to Stripe.
Under the PayPal system, payouts were tied to the end of the weekly enrollment period and timing was not always consistent. Some payouts may now be sent on a different day of the week than you’re used to.
The difference may be more noticeable for teachers offering recurring or asynchronous classes. These payouts were previously sent on a less consistent schedule, often around the 15th of the month. They will now follow the same seven-day schedule as other class earnings.
Your total earnings will not change. Only the timing of some payouts changes.
Manage bank details and failed transfers
What happens if I change my bank account before a payout?
Changing your bank account will not change when Outschool sends your payout to your Stripe balance.
Your bank information affects only the second stage of the process: the transfer from your Stripe balance to your bank. Outschool will still send the payout to Stripe according to the regular payout schedule.
What should I do if Stripe says that a transfer failed or action is required?
This usually means Stripe needs additional or updated information for your profile. Follow the instructions in the email to review your account and provide the requested details.
Failed transfers are retried automatically each day for up to 90 days. Once the issue is resolved, the funds will be sent without requiring you to request the transfer again.
Refunds
Can I still issue refunds myself?
Yes. The move to Stripe does not change when you can issue a refund yourself.
You can issue a refund until you’ve been paid for the enrollment. After you’ve been paid, contact Outschool Support to request the refund, following the same process you use today. If a refund is issued after that point, Outschool will send you an invoice through Stripe to cover the returned funds. The amount will not be deducted automatically from a future payout.
Can Outschool withdraw money from my account automatically?
No. Outschool cannot use Stripe to withdraw funds automatically from your Stripe balance or bank account.
Fees, international payouts, and taxes
Do teachers pay Stripe fees?
No. Outschool covers Stripe’s payout-processing costs before your payout is sent.
This includes international transfer costs. Those costs are charged to Outschool, not deducted from your payout.
What should teachers outside the US know?
Stripe supports payouts to teachers in Outschool’s approved teaching countries, provided that your bank account is also located in one of those countries.
Two things may be different for teachers outside the US:
Bank transfers may take longer to settle in some countries.
Your payout will be transferred to your bank in your local currency.
Transfer and settlement times are determined by Stripe and cannot be adjusted by Outschool.
Will 1099-K tax forms still be available?
Yes. 1099-K tax forms will remain available through Stripe.
Reviewing what is included in each payout
Stripe provides more detailed payout information than PayPal.
Instead of seeing one lump sum that may include several enrollments, you’ll be able to review a breakdown by enrollment. This should make it easier to understand which earnings are included in each payout.
Organizations will still be able to review payout information by teacher.
