What teachers should expect as payouts move from PayPal to Stripe

Overview

We’re updating how you receive payouts on Outschool. Payouts will move from PayPal to Stripe to improve visibility into your earnings and provide clearer payout details.

There are no changes to payouts today, and you’ll continue to be paid via PayPal as usual. No action is required at this time, and we’ll share more details and next steps when setup begins, so you have plenty of time to prepare.

  • Payouts continue through PayPal for now; no action is required

  • Stripe onboarding is not available yet and is expected to begin gradually later in May

  • Payouts via Stripe are expected to begin in late July

Timing is tentative and subject to change.

How the transition will work

We’ll introduce these changes in stages:

  • Before the change: Payouts continue through PayPal

  • Account setup: You’ll be able to create your Stripe account, while payouts continue through PayPal

  • Payouts move to Stripe: You’ll begin receiving payouts through Stripe

We’ll provide instructions and reminders at each step, including how to set up your account and manage your payout account details.

What is changing, and when will this happen?

We’re transitioning teacher payouts from PayPal to Stripe to improve visibility into your payout details. There are no changes to payouts today, and payouts will continue through PayPal for now. This transition will happen in stages, and we’ll share details and any required steps in advance, so you’ll have plenty of notice and time to set up your account before anything changes.

Do I need to take any action?

No action is required right now. Before payouts move to Stripe, you’ll be asked to create a Stripe account, and you’ll be guided through a short setup process when it becomes available.

How much effort is required to set up my Stripe account?

Setting up your Stripe account will be a simple, self-service process within your Outschool teacher dashboard. There’s nothing you need to do in advance.

Do I need to create a new Stripe account if I already use Stripe?

You’ll need to create a separate Stripe account specifically for Outschool payouts, even if you already use Stripe elsewhere. This account is set up through your Outschool teacher dashboard and is directly connected to your Outschool account.

Will switching from PayPal to Stripe affect my earnings or fees?

This change does not affect your earnings or how you price your classes, and there are no additional fees for teachers.

Does this change apply to all payouts?

All payout types will move to Stripe, including earnings from enrollments and incentives like the OUTreach referral program. Once you’ve completed onboarding, you’ll be set up to receive payouts for both enrollments and incentives through Stripe.

Why is Outschool switching from PayPal to Stripe?

We’re making this change to improve visibility into payouts and provide a clearer, more consistent payout experience for teachers. Stripe is already used to process payments on Outschool. You can learn more about Stripe at stripe.com.

How will payouts work during the transition?

Payouts will continue through PayPal until payouts move to Stripe. During the setup phase, you’ll be able to create your Stripe account while still receiving payouts through PayPal, and once payouts move to Stripe, you’ll begin receiving payouts there.

When will I receive my payouts?

The frequency of payouts will not change. As part of this transition, payouts are expected to be distributed more evenly throughout the week. Today, payouts are often tied to the end of the weekly enrollment period. With this update, payout timing will be more consistent, with payouts arriving one week after the first class meeting of the week, or one week after purchase, depending on enrollment type. We’ll share more details in advance so you know what to expect before any changes are made.

Will PayPal still be supported, and what happens if I don’t set up Stripe?

PayPal will continue to be used until payouts fully move to Stripe. Once payouts move to Stripe, a Stripe account will be required to receive payouts. We’ll provide advance notice and reminders so you have time to set up your account before this is required.

Will I be able to see what my payout includes?

Stripe will provide more detailed payout information, including clearer breakdowns by enrollment, so you can better understand what your payout includes.

What happens if I need to return funds after I’ve already been paid?

Today, if a refund is issued after you’ve already received a payout, you return funds through PayPal. As payout management moves to Stripe, you’ll be able to return funds through that platform instead.

Will Stripe payouts be available in my country?

Stripe supports payouts to teachers residing in our approved teaching countries. As long as your bank account is located in one of these countries, you’ll be able to continue receiving payouts through Stripe.

Will I be able to access 1099-K tax forms with Stripe?

1099-K tax forms will remain available.
